1.2 Values and variables

microgpt juggles three kinds of things: whole numbers (32,033 names), decimals (a loss of 3.366) and text (“emma”). Python calls them int, float and str, and a variable is just a name you stick on one.

1Watch

knobs = 4192 makes a variable called knobs holding the int 4192. The = isn’t a question; it means “stick this name on this value”. print(knobs) shows the value on screen.

Arithmetic works as you’d expect: + - * /, where * means × (times). / always gives a float: 8 / 2 is 4.0. round(x, 3) keeps 3 decimal places.

Text lives in quotes: 'emma'. Text has its own tools: len('emma') is 4, and + glues texts together: 'emma' + '!' is 'emma!'. name[0] is the first letter (Python counts from 0) and name[-1] the last.

Methods and brackets. 'emma'.upper() is 'EMMA'. .upper() is a method: a tool that belongs to the text, written after a dot. The () brackets mean “do it now”. Without them, name.upper only names the tool and doesn’t use it. If you ever see an error mentioning builtin_function_or_method, you’ve forgotten the ().

One more type: True and False (a bool). 4 > 3 is True. You’ll use them for decisions in lesson 1.3. type(x) tells you what kind of value x is; it prints something like <class 'int'>, and you can ignore the word “class”.

Lines 9 to 12 of microgpt say “load the os, math and random toolboxes” (one for files, one for maths, one for chance), then random.seed(42) fixes the dice so every run gives the same random results. You’ll see why in lesson 3.4.

2Explore

Change anything and run again. You can’t break it.

3Build

Two blanks: divide knobs by names_in_dataset, and make shout from first_name.upper() plus '!'. Use the variable names, not the numbers or letters themselves.

# Values have types: whole numbers (int), decimals (float), text (str),
# and True/False (bool).
# A variable is just a name stuck on a value.

names_in_dataset = 32033          # an int (whole number)
knobs = 4192 # how many knobs microgpt has
loss_at_start = 3.366             # a float (decimal number)
first_name = 'emma'               # a str (text)

knobs_per_name = 0  # TODO: knobs divided by names_in_dataset
shout = '' # TODO: first_name in capitals, plus '!' (use .upper() with its brackets)
# Seeing "builtin_function_or_method" in an error? You forgot the () after .upper

print(type(names_in_dataset), type(loss_at_start), type(first_name))
print('knobs per name:', round(knobs_per_name, 3))  # round(x, 3) keeps 3 decimal places
print(shout, 'has', len(first_name), 'letters')

4Check yourself

1. What type is 3.366?
2. What does len('kaylee') give?
3. name = 'ava'. What does print(name.upper() + '!') show?

5Unlocked in microgpt

Lines 9 to 12: three imports and the random seed. Small, but every run of microgpt starts here.
