What Zero to microGPT collects, why, and who it is shared with
The short version
- You can take every lesson without an account. Your progress and lab code are saved in your own browser. If you sign in, they are also saved to your account so they follow you to other devices.
- Module check answers, which lessons you open and finish, and any lesson feedback you send are stored with a random id instead of your name, so we can see whether the lessons work.
- Your Python code runs in your browser. It is not sent anywhere when you press Run or Check.
- If you ask the AI tutor a question, your message, the lesson's notes and your current lab code are sent to an AI provider so it can answer.
- We don't sell personal information, and we don't show ads.
What we collect
Without an account
- Progress and lab code: stored in your browser's local storage. Clearing your browser data deletes it.
- Module check answers: when you submit a module check (the short quiz before and after a module), we store which options you picked, your score, the time, and a random id made by your browser. The id is not linked to your name, email or IP address. If you are signed in, the answers are also linked to your account. We use them only to measure whether the lessons work and to improve questions.
- Lesson activity: the first time you open a lesson, pass its lab, or complete it, we store that fact, the time and the same random id. We use it to see where learners get stuck.
- Lesson feedback: if you answer "Was this lesson clear?", we store your answer, any comment you type, and the random id. Please don't put personal details in comments.
- Your IP address, if you use the tutor, is used to count free tutor messages. It is kept for about a day.
- Standard server logs from our hosting provider (Cloudflare), such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested. These are used for security and keeping the site running.
With an account
- Your name, email address and, if you sign in with Google, your Google profile picture.
- Login sessions, so you stay signed in.
- Your lesson progress and lab code, so they follow you to other devices.
- Purchase records, if you buy Pro. Card details are handled by our payment processor and never reach our servers.
The AI tutor
Tutor messages are processed by Cloudflare Workers AI or Anthropic (Claude), depending on configuration, to generate a reply. Please don't put personal information in tutor messages or in your code. Replies are generated by AI and can be wrong.
Learners under 18
This course is written for high-school students. If you are under 13, please don't create an account or use the AI tutor without a parent or guardian's permission. The lessons, films and labs work without an account. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Who we share data with
We share data only with the services that run the site:
- Cloudflare: hosting, database, storage, AI and email.
- Anthropic: the AI tutor, when enabled.
- Google: if you choose Google sign-in.
- Our payment processor: if you buy Pro.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it.
Your choices
- You can delete your account from your settings. That removes your account data and saved progress; module check answers, lesson activity and feedback are kept without the link to your account.
- You can clear lesson progress by clearing your browser's site data.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, or for it to be deleted, by contacting us.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date at the top of this page.
