11.2 Your own dataset

microgpt doesn’t know anything about names. It learns the patterns in whatever list you give it. Swap the data and you have a brand-new model: a state-name inventor, a Pokémon generator, a fake-band-name machine.

1Watch

The lab starts with the 50 US state names (spaces removed). Nothing else changes: the tokenizer builds its vocabulary from your data, the model trains, and the samples imitate what it saw. With 150 steps it invents things like “monstana”, “arisona” and “newana”.

Things to try, and what they teach you:

  • A tiny list, trained for many steps: the model memorises and repeats. The 50 states trained for 1,000 steps give 15 real states out of 20 samples. That’s overfitting.
  • Longer words: raise block_size so the longest word plus BOS fits. The check tells you the minimum.
  • More steps: the loss keeps falling, but each step takes time in a browser.
  • Temperature: 0.3 for safe, 1.0 for wild (5.2).

2Explore

Dataset ideas
  • Your class’s first names
  • Pokémon or dinosaur names
  • Cities in your country
  • Planets, moons and stars
  • Song or band names (lowercase, no punctuation)
  • Made-up spell names from your favourite game

Keep it to lowercase letters for best results (“A” and “a” would be two unrelated tokens, so the model has more to learn from the same list). Everything runs in your browser; nothing you paste is uploaded.

3Build

Replace the list in docs with your own words, then Check. The checks confirm the vocabulary came from your data, every word fits the context window, and the model learned something (the last 10 steps average below know-nothing). Check runs the full training: about a minute in the browser. Stop is there if you change your mind.

This lab’s file is the complete microgpt. If you haven’t finished the 11.1 capstone yet, you may want to do that first, so this file doesn’t give it away.

This lab’s starter is a complete microgpt, which is the answer to lesson 11.1. Finish 11.1 microgpt from a blank file first, and this lab opens by itself.

4Check yourself

1. You train on only 10 words and the samples copy them exactly. This is…
2. Your longest word has 20 letters. What must block_size be at least?
3. Predict: your list is ["Bob", "bea"]. What is vocab_size?

5Unlocked in microgpt

No new lines: every line is already yours. This lesson shows they work on any data.
