2.4 Classes and objects

A number in microgpt is not just a number. It remembers where it came from, so the model can later work out how to improve it. Bundling data with behaviour like that is what a class is for.

1Watch

A class is a blueprint for a new kind of thing. class Value: defines one, and each Value(2.0) you make is an object built from it. A method is a function that belongs to the class; you call it on an object with a dot, like c.tick().

Names with double underscores, like __init__, are special: Python calls them for you. __init__ runs when you make a new object and stores its data on self, which means “this object”. So self.data is this Value’s number. In children=(), the () is an empty tuple: “no children unless you give some”. The leading _ in _children just marks it as internal bookkeeping.

When Python sees a + b it runs a.__add__(b), and a * b runs a.__mul__(b). Inside, self is a and other is b, so self.data is a’s number and other.data is b’s. The result is a new Value that remembers its two children, (self, other). That memory is the first step toward autograd, the part that works out automatically how to improve every number (Module 7).

2Explore

Change anything and run again. You can’t break it.

3Build

One blank: make __mul__ return a Value holding the product of the two numbers, remembering (self, other) as its children, just like __add__ does.

Multiply the numbers inside (self.data, other.data), not the Values themselves, and wrap the answer in Value(...). Two errors you might see: RecursionError means you wrote self * other, which calls __mul__ again and again; unsupported operand type(s) for +: 'float' and 'Value' means you returned a plain number instead of a Value.

# A class bundles data with the operations on it.
# A first look at microgpt's Value (lines 30-37): a number that remembers
# the numbers it was made from.

class Value:
    def __init__(self, data, children=()):
        self.data = data
        self.grad = 0
        self._children = children

    def __add__(self, other):       # a + b runs a.__add__(b): self is a, other is b
        return Value(self.data + other.data, (self, other))

    def __mul__(self, other):       # a * b runs a.__mul__(b)
        return Value(0) # TODO: hold the product of the two numbers inside,
                         # and remember both inputs as children, like __add__ does

a = Value(2.0)
b = Value(-3.0)
c = a * b + Value(10.0)
print('c =', c.data)
print('c was made from', len(c._children), 'values')

4Check yourself

1. What does __init__ do?
2. Inside a.__mul__(b), what is other?
3. With the Value class from Explore: a = Value(2.0); b = Value(5.0); c = a + b. What does print(c.data, len(c._children)) show?
4. Why does Value store _children?

5Unlocked in microgpt

Lines 30 to 37: the start of the Value class: data, grad, children and local grads. Line 31’s __slots__ only saves memory, so you can ignore it. grad and _local_grads stay empty for now; Module 7 fills them in.
