3.4 Randomness and weighted dice

microgpt uses randomness three times: to shuffle the names, to set its starting knobs, and to roll the dice when it writes. Yet every run gives the same numbers. The secret is a seed.

1Watch

random.seed(42) (line 12) sets the starting point of the “random” sequence, so it is repeatable: same seed, same shuffle, same rolls. Set the seed again and the sequence starts over. That’s why your capstone can match Karpathy’s run exactly.

random.shuffle(docs) (line 20) mixes the names. random.choices(faces, weights=w, k=10000) is a weighted die: each face comes up in proportion to its weight. Writing name=value inside a call fills in the input with that name: weights=w gives the weights, and k=10000 asks for 10,000 rolls. With few rolls the shares wobble; with thousands they settle near the expected values.

choices always returns a list, even for one roll, so microgpt’s writing dice (line 196) take the first item with [0].

2Explore

Change anything and run again. You can’t break it.

a
0.0% / 35.8%
k
0.0% / 24.0%
m
0.0% / 20.6%
j
0.0% / 19.6%
0 rolls so far

Pale bar: the weight’s share (what you expect). Solid bar: what actually came up. Few rolls are noisy; thousands settle on the expected share. Default weights are how many of the 32,033 names start with a, k, m, j.

3Build

Two blanks. First, add one line so the second shuffle of again comes out in exactly the same order as names. Second, make the die weighted using the weights list.

import random

# random.seed makes "random" repeatable: same seed, same results (line 12).
random.seed(42)
names = ['emma', 'olivia', 'ava', 'isabella', 'sophia']
random.shuffle(names) # line 20 shuffles the dataset the same way
print('shuffled:', names)

# Shuffle a second copy so it comes out in exactly the same order.
again = ['emma', 'olivia', 'ava', 'isabella', 'sophia']
# TODO: one line here, so the next shuffle repeats the first one
random.shuffle(again)
print('again:   ', again, ' same?', again == names)

# A weighted die: choices picks in proportion to the weights (line 196).
faces = ['a', 'k', 'm']
weights = [4410, 2963, 2538] # how many names start with each letter
rolls = random.choices(faces, k=10000) # TODO: make the die weighted
share_a = rolls.count('a') / len(rolls)

print('share of "a" in 10,000 rolls:', share_a, ' expected about', round(4410 / sum(weights), 3))

4Check yourself

1. Why does microgpt call random.seed(42)?
2. Predict: random.seed(1); a = random.random(); random.seed(1); b = random.random(); print(a == b)
3. Weights [3, 1]: roughly what share is the first face over many rolls?
4. Predict: print(random.choices(['a', 'b'], weights=[1, 0], k=3))
