4.2 Slope by nudging

How steep is a curve at one point? Nudge the input a tiny bit and watch how far the output moves. That ratio is the slope (or derivative), and it’s the single most important number in machine learning.

1Watch

You know the slope of a straight line from school: rise ÷ run. From (1, 3) to (3, 7) the line goes 2 along and 4 up, so its slope is 4 ÷ 2 = 2.

A curve isn’t straight, but zoom in close enough on one point and it almost is. So nudge: step a tiny distance h to each side of x, measure the rise between the two points, and divide by the run between them, which is 2h:

slope ≈ (f(x + h) − f(x − h)) ÷ (2h)

Try it for x² at x = 3 with h = 0.1: f(3.1) = 9.61 and f(2.9) = 8.41, so the rise is 1.2 and the run is 0.2. Slope = 1.2 ÷ 0.2 = 6. Do the same at x = 1, 2 and 5 and you get 2, 4 and 10: the slope of x² is always double x, written 2x.

Why nudge both ways? Nudging one way, from 3 to 3.1, gives (9.61 − 9) ÷ 0.1 = 6.1: it leans a little, because the curve bends. Nudging both ways balances the lean out. Mathematicians call this slope the derivative.

Positive slope: the output rises as the input rises. Negative: it falls. Zero: you’re at a flat spot, maybe the bottom of a valley. Later, training will use this number to decide which way to turn each knob (Module 6).

x = 3.0
h = 0.50

rise = f(3.50) − f(2.50) = 12.250 − 6.250 = 6.000

run = 2h = 1.00

slope ≈ rise ÷ run = 6.000 (the exact slope at x = 3.0 is 6.0)

Nudging both ways lands on the exact slope of x² for any h. Nudging one way leans: it’s off by exactly h, so shrink h and watch it close in.

3Build

One blank: slope(f, x) is the rise f(x + h) - f(x - h) divided by the run 2 * h. The brackets matter: write (rise) / (2 * h). Without them, / 2 * h means “divide by 2, then multiply by h”.

New bits in the starter: lambda x: x * x is a one-line function, and 1e-6 means 0.000001.

# The slope by nudging: move the input a tiny step h each way, see how much
# the output rises, and divide by how far you moved (rise ÷ run).

def slope(f, x, h=1e-6):        # 1e-6 means 0.000001, a tiny nudge
    return 0  # TODO: the rise f(x + h) - f(x - h) divided by the run 2 * h
    #           brackets around BOTH: (rise) / (2 * h), because / 2 * h means "÷ 2, then × h"

# lambda x: x * x is a one-line function, the same as
#   def square(x): return x * x
square = lambda x: x * x
print('slope of x*x at 3:', round(slope(square, 3), 6))     # should be 6
print('slope of x*x at -1:', round(slope(square, -1), 6))   # should be -2
print('slope of 3x + 5 anywhere:', round(slope(lambda x: 3 * x + 5, 10), 6))  # 3

4Check yourself

1. The slope of x² at x = 5 is…
2. At the bottom of a valley the slope is…
3. What does slope(lambda x: 5 * x - 1, 100) give, about?

5Unlocked in microgpt

No new lines yet, but microgpt is full of slopes like this: every time it learns, it works out a slope for each of its knobs.
