4.6 Probability distributions

A language model’s output is a list of chances: 14% “a”, 9% “k”, … A list like that, never negative and adding up to exactly 1, is a probability distribution.

1Watch

Counts become chances by dividing by the total: 4,410 of 32,033 names start with “a”, so the chance is 4,410 ÷ 32,033 = 0.1377, or 13.8%. Do that for every letter and the chances add up to exactly 1, because all the counts together make up the total.

In code, chances are written as decimals (0.1377), not percentages (13.77). So a distribution adds up to 1, and 1 is the same as 100%.

A close cousin is the average (or mean): add up the numbers and divide by how many there are. The average of 2, 4 and 9 is 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Training uses averages all the time, for example the average surprise over many guesses.

Every model in this course outputs a distribution over 27 symbols. Generating text means rolling a die weighted by it (3.4); scoring a model means checking the chance it gave to what really happened (5.3), and its surprise is −log of that chance (4.3).

One blank: for each key k in counts, set chances[k] = counts[k] / total. Use a single slash: // rounds down to whole numbers. And keep them as decimals, not × 100.

# A probability distribution: chances that are never negative and add up to 1.
# Counts become chances by dividing by the total.
# (You'll do the same for letter pairs in lesson 5.1.)

counts = {'a': 4410, 'k': 2963, 'm': 2538, 'other': 22122}
total = sum(counts.values())
chances = {}
# TODO: for each key k in counts:  chances[k] = counts[k] / total

print('total:', total)
rounded = {}
for k in chances:
    rounded[k] = round(chances[k], 3)
print(rounded)
print('adds up to:', sum(chances.values()))

4Check yourself

1. Written as decimals, a distribution’s chances must…
2. Counts a: 3, b: 1. The chance of a is…
3. With c = {'x': 2, 'y': 6}, what does print(c['y'] / sum(c.values())) show?
