3.3 Topological sort

Socks before shoes. Underwear before trousers before belt. Find an order for everything that respects every rule: that’s a topological sort, and it’s the backbone of how neural networks learn.

1Watch

The rules live in a dict called needs: it maps each item to the items that must come before it, so 'shoes': ['socks', 'trousers'] means socks and trousers go on before shoes.

The recipe is depth-first search (lesson 3.2) with one twist: add an item to the order only after everything it needs has been added. The function calls itself on each need first, so the needs land first. Here is the trace from the shoes:

build('shoes') → build('socks'): add socks → build('trousers') → build('underwear'): add underwear → back in trousers: add trousers → back in shoes: add shoes

In the code, build is a helper function written inside topo_order; it can use order and visited from the outer function. microgpt does the same.

microgpt’s build_topo (lines 60 to 68) is exactly this, on its graph of numbers: each Value remembers the values it was made from in _children, and those are its needs. Then backward() walks the order in reverse, like undressing: shoes come off first. Lesson 7.5 shows why that reverse order is precisely what the chain rule needs.

2Explore

start at
visited checkwrite the item
shoessockstrousersunderwearbelt
def build(item):
if item not in visited:
visited.add(item)
for before in needs[item]:
build(before)
order.append(item)
now: Start: explore 'shoes'.
path: …
visited = set()
order = []
step 1 of 19

Lines go down from each item to what it needs. Orange outline: the path of calls still open. Green: already written into order.

3Build

The starter appends each item before visiting its needs, which is wrong. Move the order.append(item) line so items are added after their needs: below the for loop, but still inside the if. The checks also try a diamond, where two paths meet.

# Topological sort: an order where everything comes AFTER what it needs.
# Socks before shoes. This is exactly microgpt's build_topo (lines 60-68).

# needs maps each item to the items that must come before it.
needs = {
    'shoes': ['socks', 'trousers'],
    'socks': [],
    'trousers': ['underwear'],
    'underwear': [],
    'belt': ['trousers'],
}

def topo_order(goal):
    order = []
    visited = set()
    def build(item): # a helper inside topo_order: it can use order and visited
        if item not in visited:
            visited.add(item)
            order.append(item) # TODO: wrong place: move this line so it runs after the for loop
            for before in needs[item]:
                build(before)
    build(goal)
    return order

print('to put on shoes:', topo_order('shoes'))
print('to put on a belt:', topo_order('belt'))

4Check yourself

1. In a topological order, an item comes…
2. Is there only one valid order?
3. Predict: what does topo_order('belt') return?
4. Predict: in the diamond (top needs left and right, both need bottom), what is topo_order('top')?

5Unlocked in microgpt

Lines 60 to 68: topo, visited and build_topo, the first half of backward().
